HYSTERIA CITY
SCARE TACTICS

VERBAL SCARE:
DO NOT YELL! Yelling will only make you lose your voice in a hurry. Use cough drops or hard candy to help keep your voice in shape.

A verbal scare is when you use your own voice and dialog to intimidate and scare a person.

For instance, you are portraying a witch at the haunt. You would want to have a cackle and a rasp in your vocalizations. You may say things like, "Such a nice little boy, you will fit in my couldron perfectly!"

This method can also be as simple as popping out and saying "COME HERE!"

You also can add a punch to a verbal scare by stomping your foot down at the exact time you say "COME HERE!"

PHYSICAL SCARE:
This method uses body movements (or lack of) to make people uncomfortable and afraid. Your actions often speak louder than words in a haunted house. If you move in unusual or strange manners in these unique environments, people have a tendancy to feel un easy. Quick arm motions, twitching, blinking too much, not blinking enough, odd hand gestures and wicked limp are all methods of using your body to create unease in our guests.

PERSONAL PROP SCARE:
This method involves using a prop as part of your costume to deliver a scare. An example is the chainsaw. A guy with a chainsaw usually can scare people by reving the saw and running after them.

Other less elaberate methods work just as well or better in some cases.

Shaker Can:
A metal can with some nuts and bolts inside. Shake the can as victims come near.

Chinese yoyo:
Be stalking a victim, get close and then pop out the paper chinese yoyo towards them.

Bike horn: A quick sqeak of the horn produces a good scare.

Weapons:
Simulated weapons can be intimidating if used properly.
Remember, if a mad man has a weapon, he is going to kill you.
Do not act as if you are going to stab someone, and then stop in mid swing. Follow thru is best. Act like you missed the victim with a full swing, or act as if something has blocked your access to the victim.

Body Parts:
Simulated body parts can help to achieve a scare. Make sure your body part looks real as possible. Use vasoline to create a wet look on latex pieces. Invite people to touch or taste your fresh hunk of flesh. Insist that they taste it. do not force them of course, but follow them as if you are now their friend who is inviting them to join in on your demented dinner.

Dragging body parts by rope or chain makes people nervous. You can slide the meat towards innocent victims feat with the rope as they are waiting for their punishment.

SCENE SCARE:
A scene scare is on that utilizes some portion of the scene or set you are working in. Do not use any set piece or prop for acting unless otherwise advised to by a management member.
Some sets have "gags" built into them such as:
*Drop windows
*Actor movable props
*Coves
*Hide locations
*Doors
and other devises which will aid in getting a scare. All operation of these methods will be described to you in detail by management before you perform the gag.

EFFECT SCARE:
Effect scare is when you use special effects such as lighting, audio, video, fog and other effects to create a scare.

For example, a tunnel of light spins in a cloud of fog as guests approach and head into the beams.

You are on the back side of the light and they can not see you through the fogged beams of light.
You then pop out in front of the beams of light before guests get into the illuminated area.
You now appear to be a black shadow figure as you are silohuetted in the beams of light now behind you. This can create a great scare.

Blacklight:
Adding flouesent pieces to your costume can add great effects to your scares. If there is a blacklight in the area of your set, use flouresent items and makeup to create great illusions and effects.

LED Lights:
LED lights come in many different sizes and shapes including battery operated strobe lights & blacklights. They can be used in many different ways to create scares in the dark. Quickly turn one on under your chin as a victim waks by. Simple and effective. The possibilities are endless.

Voice Changer:
Simple voice changing devices are available everywhere and can add great effects to your normal voice.

There are many modern electronic devices available that can enhance your haunt performances and scare tactics.
